MSP brings metrology and right-first-time expertise to major Advanced Manufacturing facility
by MSP Marketing on 5:06 PM on November 23, 2023
MSP is delighted to announce it has become members of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS).
Adding to the impressive NMIS membership list, leading metrology company, MSP, will use its expertise in CNC automation, CNC machine tool capability and micron-accurate machining to help towards the NMIS mission of driving the future of manufacturing through innovation.
The relationship between MSP and NMIS is long-standing with MSP having previously been members of the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), one of NMIS’ five manufacturing centres.
NMIS grew out of the University Strathclyde’s AFRC with the aim to be a major advanced manufacturing facility in Scotland, helping support businesses of all sizes to become more productive, tap into emerging markets and achieve net-zero targets.
The centre will benefit from MSP’s full PerfectPart suite of products across its CNC machine tools. This includes a fully-automated AutoClock for automated and accurate probe setup and calibration as well as NC-Checker and NC-PartLocator for machine capability checking, automated part location and in-process measurements.
These products have benefitted manufacturers in a wide-range of sectors, from the likes of BAE Systems, to leading F1 teams to Prestwick-based Spirit AeroSystems. Their innovative capabilities have delivered great results including reducing part setup times from days to minutes; allowing for 24/7 lights-out CNC machining and producing right-first-time parts, every time.
MSP will also provide extensive training to NMIS to guide them on key CNC machining concepts and disciplines such as the fundamentals of 5-axis machining, on-machine probing and programming techniques.
Tracy McCarroll, NMIS Membership Engagement Manager, says: “We are delighted to have MSP join our esteemed membership list and are looking forward to seeing the value their capabilities will bring to the centre. After working with MSP on ground-breaking research projects as part of the AFRC, we are confident this new relationship will bring about more advances for the industry and we can’t wait to see what’s next”.

In turn, MSP will benefit from the extensive support NMIS offers and the opportunities that come from tapping into their vast industrial and academic networks.
As Margaret Toberty, MSP’s Director of Operations, explains, MSP is a perfect match for the capabilities of NMIS: “We are proud to begin this NMIS membership and sit alongside other industry leaders such as Renishaw, Fanuc, Nikken and Sandvik Coromant. MSP are experts in the global manufacturing industry and support it to become more competitive, and sustainable by leapfrogging the skills shortage crisis with automation. Partnering with NMIS can only strengthen this ability.
“At MSP, we believe open collaboration is extremely valuable in generating new ideas and understanding what future innovations are needed in the industry. We look forward to partnering with NMIS and their members on complex part manufacturing projects”.
